Dear Julie and Dick:

Our long-awaited instrument has arrived, has been set up, and is not fully operational. It has only been a few days since our new toy has become part of the operation, but we have come to love it, and use it frequently. A couple of things I want to share with you. First, even the brief training my postdocs received on the OLIS has allowed us to become quite comfortable in its operation. We have been using it as though it has always been in the lab. Second, we already have publishable data in two areas! The first publishable data came from the runs Chia-Hui Tai did while the instrument was being set up and tested. Shortly after, in fact this week, we needed some supporting data for a poster to be presented next week at the ASBMB meeting. A couple hours later, done, analyzed, and included on the poster.

I want to thank you both for putting up with my doubts, real and imagined, and again for graciously allowing me to visit and use the instrument.
