Maintenance of the Olis Cooling Box to prevent and clear blockage in tubing
The Olis Closed Cycle Cooling Box circulates cooling fluid through the xenon arc lamp housing. Without this cooling, the lamp will overheat and explode. To keep the cooling box in good operational form, we recommend that you flush the system as frequently as monthly.
The actual timing of this flushing will vary depending based on the purity of the water used and the numbers of hours the system is on.
Visual inspection will alert you to any particles growing in the water, which could quickly accumulate around junction points and cause a slow down or complete blockage of the water flow. Don’t wait until this blockage occurs, but be pre-emptive.
Start with a monthly schedule and adjust with experience.
- Inspect the water container (“burper bottle”) and verify that the fluid level it is remains about three-quarters full.
- If it is low, add more water.
NOTE: If someone disconnected the burper bottle from the flow lines, there is no way to monitor the volume of water available for use.
Every 6 months:
- Change the fluid in the water container entirely with fresh distilled water.
Annually: Clean the cooling system thoroughly using step 1-4 below.
- Verify that the lamp is off before emptying the existing fluid from the lines.
- Drain the tubing:
a. Disconnect all the tubing from the lamp, pump, and burper bottle.
b. Drain the tubing
c. If the tubing is dirty, flush the lines with water
d. Reconnect the tubing to the lamp, pump, and burper bottle by connecting the tubing to the pump inlet tube and lamp, and the outlet tube to the water container and the lamp.
- Fill the water container with fresh deionized or distilled water to three-quarters level.
- Turn on and check for security of connections and constant flow before turning the lamp on.
If you are unable to get a good flow by flushing with water, you might need to return the box to Olis for comprehensive cleaning. Beyond shipping fees, the cost is minimal. Call to discuss with customer service.
Important: Before turning on the cooling box again after maintenance, ensure that the lamp is off! Do not operate the lamp without an operational cooling system in place because the lamp will quickly overheat and may explode.
